Vans become part of driving and rest-time enforcement

From 1 July 2026, vans over 2.5 tonnes performing international goods transport must be fitted with a tachograph and comply with the EU driving and rest-time rules. Here is an overview of who is affected and what it requires.

Who is affected?

  • Vans with a gross weight over 2.5 tonnes
  • Performing international goods transport
  • Goods transport for hire or reward, or on own account

Requirements for companies

  • Installation of tachographs in the relevant vehicles
  • Application for a company card (tachograph card)
  • A permit for international van transport is required

Requirements for drivers

  • Use of the tachograph during international transport
  • Compliance with driving and rest-time rules
  • Daily and weekly driving limits
  • Required breaks and rest periods
  • Use of a personal driver card

Control and enforcement

  • The Danish Road Traffic Authority summons companies by letter with access to the Business Portal
  • Police can enforce the rules at roadside checks from 1 July 2026
